Wedgwoodderrière - 2021
Artist Darren Neave. Video & photography by Stuart Shackleton. Music by Karelle + Kuntur (half speed).
Work in progress, a video/photographic process of sublimation and the object. My obsession with Wedgwood continues with bricolage and absurd appropriation. WARNING: Adult Content.
Turntable Gallery - 2021
Artist Darren Neave. Video & photography by Stuart Shackleton.
Lilliputmeltz (7) - Final research project work made as part of my MRes at the Royal College of Art. An orange rubbery square, synonymous with vapidity and poor taste represents our human impact in more ways than one. The cheese is made to melt, as temperatures rise, perfectly consistent with planetary demise. The Lilliput Lane model houses, which represented affection are now forgotten and unloved. This body of work adds insult to injury. A blanket of cheese on an uncherished heirloom.
Lilliputmirrorballz (2) / (Disco), Lilliputmirrorballz (15), Backstothewallboys / (Disco), Platemirrorball, Platezmirrorballz (2), Platezmirrorballz (10) - These pieces were inspired by the George Michael video - Outside (2006), where the space flips from a male public convenience into a nightclub. My version plays on the mirrorball tiles being hidden from plain sight. Only when they are flipped or tipped do they reveal their secret side. Add in music and lights and the pieces become more fabulous. I inherited large collections of objects from my parents, which were mass-produced, worthless and unloved, they have now been transformed.
Lockdownpantsdown - 2020
Artist Darren Neave. Video & photography by Stuart Shackleton. Music by Perfume Genius.
A piece made whilst in 'Lockdown' assessing my belongings all over the home. Underwear, pants, tighty-whities, briefs and y-fronts are in excess in my wardrobe. Why do we obsess over these garments? This piece only showcases a small amount, I liked the idea of wearing so many that I didn't feel 'raunchy' - just 'ridiculous' - to the point I could hardly walk let alone dance! Whilst away from my friends, colleagues and family - who cared what I looked like, what I wore, what I did, where and when?
Travelodgetrance - 2017
Artist Darren Neave. Video & photography by Stuart Shackleton. Music edited to include breathing by artist.
The rooms within this hotel chain utilise similar layouts, colour schemes and furniture - I wanted to ‘un-brand’ the space and layer it with lights, colour and atmosphere, then strip off and dance away… a space to be myself, to escape…at least until checkout.
